This set up provides a route to produce hydrogen and added value chemicals from renewable feedstock as crude glycerol, aqueous fractions of pyrolysis liquids, cheese whey or other aqueous waste stream at moderate pressure (around 35 bar) and relative low temperature (around 230 ºC).

Bench-scale hydrothermal processing unit

The bench-scale hydrothermal processing unit is a versatile setup that enables to conduct catalytic tests using gas and/or liquid feedstocks under pressurized conditions. Initially, this rig was conceived as a scale-up of the microscale pressurized unit also available in our facilities. However, the bench-scale test rig has been designed and constructed not only with the goal of a greater processing capacity, but also aiming at a greater flexibility and a much easier maintenance upon processing of various “dirty” or difficult-to-handle feedstocks, e.g. biomass pyrolysis liquids (bio-oil).

Microscale catalytic fixed bed test rig

The catalytic fixed bed test rig, operated at atmospheric pressure, enables to do catalytic tests at a microscale, hence needing very small amounts of catalyst and thus facilitating the screening of catalysts at varying operating conditions.
The HPLC liquid feeding system allows feeding of various liquid feedstocks including biomass pyrolysis liquids (bio-oils), crude glycerol solutions, cheese whey, etc. Feedstock can be preheated up to 180 ºC, thus allowing (if needed) a preliminary evaporation of the feed.
